How to Brew Coffee with an AeroPress

What You'll Need:

  • AeroPress

  • AeroPress filter

  • Freshly ground coffee

  • Hot water (ideally around 175°F to 185°F or 79°C to 85°C)

  • Stirring utensil

  • Timer

  • Mug

Step 1: Prepare Your AeroPress

  1. Start by placing a filter in the AeroPress cap. Rinse the filter with hot water to remove any paper taste and preheat the AeroPress and your mug.

Step 2: Grind Your Coffee

  1. Grind your coffee beans to a medium-fine consistency, similar to table salt. You'll need about 17-20 grams of coffee for one serving.

Step 3: Add Coffee and Water then Stir

  1. Place the AeroPress on a sturdy mug with the filter side down.

  2. Add the ground coffee into the AeroPress chamber.

  3. Start your timer and pour hot water over the coffee, saturating all the grounds. Aim to fill the AeroPress to the desired level, usually about halfway to two-thirds full.

  4. After pouring the water, give the coffee and water mixture a gentle stir using the stirring utensil. This helps ensure all the coffee grounds are fully saturated.

Step 4: Insert Plunger and Brew

  1. After stirring, insert the plunger into the AeroPress and pull up slightly to create a vacuum seal.

  2. Let the coffee brew for about 1 minute.

Step 5: Press & Enjoy!

  1. Once the brewing time is up, slowly and steadily press down on the plunger with consistent pressure. Aim to complete the press in about 20-30 seconds.

  2. Once you've pressed all the coffee through the AeroPress, remove it from your mug and discard the used coffee grounds and filter.

  3. Dilute your brewed coffee with hot water or enjoy it as is, depending on your preference.

  4. Clean your AeroPress by removing the filter cap and pushing the plunger to eject the coffee grounds. Rinse all parts with water.

Tips:

  • Experiment with different coffee-to-water ratios and grind sizes to find your perfect brew.

  • AeroPress brewing is versatile, so feel free to adjust parameters like water temperature, brew time, and agitation to suit your taste preferences.
